Save Palermo From Demolition- April 26th
Trafalgar Twp Historical Society is concerned that the report we expect to be presented regarding Palermo on Monday April 26 at 5pm at Oakville Town council will not go far enough to protect Palermo Village. For one thing it seperates Palermo by Dundas and does not include the important south side of Bronte Rd. We would like to see the Town designate Palermo as a Heritage District to ensure it is saved for generations. Unfortunately you will only be able to view the report online one week in advance and if you have not registered by noon on April 26 you will not be able to speak at this planning and development meeeting or at the council meeting where it will be finalized. It is important that we get copies of this report to all our interested seniors who do not have access to the internet. If we are successful this would make Palermo the only Heritage District outside of old Oakville and I believe one of the only designated communities on Dundas Street- a very significant street in our Countries history. At the moment there are 5 locations designated as heritage in Palermo and almost every other house in Palermo is on the heritage registry but we do not feel based on current trends that this is enough to save these buildings from demolition. What's the harm in making it a district?? We have a unique opportunity here to save the last remaining town in the former Twp of Trafalgar (once this is gone there are no more chances- this is it!) and have developers create in-fill properties that fit the historical nature of this community so that we have a fantastic village that will be a destination point for shopping and to live in a distinct community. I urge you to either attend the meeting and make written comments there or to send your comments to the Town by April 26th- the address is below. Please also send us a copy so we have them to present to council at the appropriate time. michelle@tths.ca This may very well be the most important thing we ever do as a Historical Society- please help us save the last Town in Trafalgar from demolition- we won't have a second chance.
